He was a state champion miler in high school and ran track and cross country in college. He was the sports editor of his college's news paper at Glenville State College, before transfering to and graduating from Fairmont State University. After college, he spent 8 years working as a stock broker before leaving Wall Street to serve in the Army National Guard. He served honorably in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was awarded ten different awards for his actions in combat.
