Jack the Ripper Heads for Hollywood - A Study in Red, The Movie!

Imagine the scene - Author sitting at his computer checks his e-mail inbox and finds a message from a Hollywood film company. They want to make his book in to a movie! Quite possibly this is the ultimate dream of every writer who sits down and puts his thoughts, his soul, and his research into conceiving what he hopes will one day find its way into the world of the published literary creation. Having negotiated the long hard road of finding a publisher willing to take a chance on the book and put in place the financial backing to see the book go into print, and then seeing the book not only go on sale, but do rather well, is of course immensely satisfying to the writer, who then perhaps harbours that dream of his work one day being presented to a wider audience on the silver screen. Well, in the case of "˜A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper,' the dream is on the way to becoming a reality. I did indeed receive that e-mail completely out of the blue. Neither I, my publisher nor agent had any idea that Thunderball Films had been tracking the books' progress for some time. They had been interested in the concept of the story and felt that it would be a novel that could successfully make the transition from book to screen. Needless to say, I was surprised, shocked and delighted at the same time as they began with a polite inquiry as to whether the Motion Picture/Television had been sold, and, if not, whether I might be interested in selling those rights to them. There followed an inordinate amount of emails between myself and the Executive Producer at Thunderball, Mario Domina, the end result being that I was delighted to enter into an agreement to grant Thunderball Films the rights to make the movie version of 'A Study in Red.' I was, and still am, ignorant of much of the process that goes into turning a novel into a Hollywood screenplay, something that thankfully is not part of my responsibility as the film production company will handle everything from now on in. I was thrilled to be offered a role as consultant on the movie, so at least I will have some degree of input into the final production. Thunderball will be using their London agents to handle much of the process as work on the project progresses, and they hope that the movie will eventually be shot here in the UK. I can imagine nothing quite as exciting as the prospect of visiting the film set to witness the characters from the pages of my novel being brought to life and to actually see and hear my creations as they are brought to life before my eyes. Am I excited? Of course I am? Am I still in shock? You bet I am. As I said in the beginning this must represent a dream come true for any author, and especially for one who is admittedly not a household name. The movie will probably not be in the same league as the mega-bucks productions of the major Hollywood studios, and may not have a glittering premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, or even the Leicester Square Odeon, but it will be made, and it will be seen in movie theatres across the USA and hopefully in Europe and here in the UK too.
