Critique Group for Historical Fiction

By Mirella Patzer

IF you are writing historical fiction, please join us at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Historical-Fiction-Writers-Critique-Group/. The group has been going strong since 2004. At Historical Fiction Writer’s Critique groups, we mean business. You must complete 3 critiques per month. In exchange, you will receive excellent feedback. If you can't meet this standard, please don't ask to join!

Writers know that we are blind to our own work. Feedback is critical. This critique group will help polish your work and make it more publishable. You will learn techniques to apply to your writing and the elements that create good fiction. Unless you receive feedback on your story, you won't know whether you're on the right track, what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong. To qualify as a member you must:

  • Critique a minimum of 3 chapters per month
  • Be actively writing a historical novel and submit chapters for critique.
  • Have intermediate to advanced writing skills and have mastered point of view, passive writing, and showing-not-telling.

We welcome historical fiction authors of medieval, historical fantasy, historical romance, napoleonic, time travel, civil war, westerns, American, Canadian, adventure, novels. As long as it occurs prior to World War II, we consider it historical! We have some simple rules:

  1. Do not submit your work until you've offered 3 critiques first. You must complete 3 critiques per month minimum.
  2. Try to do some critiques between your submissions.
  3. Keep your posts to 5,000 words or less.
  4. Always polish your draft before you post. Critiquing is too valuable a resource to waste.
  5. Acknowledge and thank your critiquers.
  6. This group is for people who want to improve and want honest opinions about how to do so.

We encourage our critiquers to be honest and helpful. We encourage our authors to leave fragile egos at the door! So if you're interested and are willing to participate, please join us!

About the Author

Ever since I learned to read, I adored stories about royal women of medieval times. I am the author of two medieval novels - Bloodstone Castle and Heinrich the Fowler. My short story, Down Three Steps was featured in the bestselling anthology Mamma Mia: Good Italian Girls Talk Back. I'm currently working on an anthology of World War II Italy and another medieval novel of the Ottonian Empire.
