A Brief Story Of Story
By Jeffrey FriedbergThe mission of the writer is to make their Work a real world that draws the reader into it by reason of commonality of that reality and its humanity.
Tolkien's characters, and Peter Jackson's directing, the superior acting of the astounding cast, production values, photography, texture, shading, tone, pacing, and the stunningly applied musical score are spell-binding. Yet it was Tolkien's writing that made it come to life. The characters all move from action to action as smoothly and fully as real life and living beings might---propelled---driven by events and motivation in a seamless logic of reality. The reason for this immensely poetic and inexorable flow of action, one sequence after another---the realism of it all---is that the characters are so rounded, so fully developed and informed---so real---that they cannot help but behave as they do, or do what circumstances inspire or require. Events inspire! the action, and action informs the events. These character s are alive. Tolkien's original writing of the books gave them a life so real, that they seem to write their own. He created their parameters, and their universe, and then he turned them loose. This is the job of the writer, to make the Work into a real world that draws the reader into it by reason of commonality of that reality and humanity.
