"Refuge In Emptiness"

By Shannon Evans

Title: Refuge In Emptiness "Refuge In Emptiness" is a theologically sound contemporary presentation of the "end times." Clearly presented and a compelling read, Chastain has created a thoroughly believable work of fiction that sucks the young adult reader in from the "end" to the culminating new beginning. The basic premise of the book is that those who are baptized believers have been taken up to heaven in the rapture. Those left behind are the non-believers organized under the World Security Forces (WSF).

The WSG is a militaristic hierachy that is organized along the same structure as that of the Roman occupiers of Judea in the years of the early Christian church. As some of the survivors of the Rapture begin to question the leadership and methods of the WSF, they turn back to the Word of God and seek refuge in the Woodville Baptist Church. 100 strong, they stand in face of certain death steadfast in their faith ready to seek martyrdom if necessary.

The conversational style of the work is easy to follow and helps to develop the characters, intrigues, and poignantly presents the sense of helplessness felt by those left behind. The strength of the realistic dialogue and the rich physical character description gives them real "flesh and bones" and makes them come alive on the page. Never preachy, the author's strong Christian faith is evident throughout the work. The questions that have never been satisfactorily answered by Christian theologians the world over are posed in ways that are not only thought provoking but also leave the reader questioning their own preparedness. In a world of social decay, moral depravity, and often misguided leadership, the words of Revelatlion are becoming a source of much current discussion.

"Refuge In Emptiness" presents a modern apocalalyptic look at Christianity as it exists side by side with the more material, secular world. Chastain does a remarkable job of weaving her story so that even the most skeptical believer will hang on reading to the finish.
