Dark Angel Reviews

By L. Thomas

Dorcy Edwards has only been a kitchen maid in the well-to-do Victorian household of widower Carlyle Davenport a few days. Yet she's been propositioned by the master, found him murdered, and attacked in the fog and nearly strangled. To top that, Jack the Ripper is entering the height of his killing spree, and poor Dorcy has no idea where to turn. Dorcy's world is further turned upside down when Davenport's will specifies that the murdered man had discovered the answer to the mystery of Jack the Ripper's identity, and had likely been murdered for it. Dorcy, and several others are ordered to spend a fortnight's time at Davenport's isolated island hunting preserve in order to uncover the true identity of his murderer.

SEE NO EVIL, MY PRETTY LADY is a delightful and intriguing historical mystery which will satisfy fans of historical fiction, those who read for plot, and those who enjoy character revelation and development. Dorcy is an amenable heroine, one with strong character tendencies tempered with humility and unavoidable flaws.

Gareth is a sexy hero in a restrained fashion, one that doesn't overwhelm the reader. The secondary characters are also well-delineated, from the former fiancé Felicity and husband Matthew to the Scotland Yard Inspector, Davenport's solicitor, and the older couple who manage the island lodge.

Author Miss Mae provides a wealth of genuine historical detail in the setting and plot, delicately interwoven and subtle. The plot has sufficient twists and turns that readers will find themselves figuratively turning pages quickly to discover the next revelation. I can't imagine any reader who wouldn't enjoy this book, which is attention-maintaining, intriguing, and will linger in the mind after the end. I highly recommend this book. Frost
