How to survive in Spain - the truth revealed

By Victoria Twead

Perhaps if they had known what relocating to a tiny village tucked in the Andalucían mountains would really be like, Vicky and Joe might have hesitated longer. Victoria Twead reveals all in her coming book.

Set in sun-scorched southern Spain, Victoria Twead’s hilarious new book, ‘Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools’, describes their life changing move and the culture shock awaiting them. Instead of the laid-back, carefree life in the sun they were expecting, the couple are plunged into often bewildering village life.

Moving abroad is always fraught with difficulty and Vicky and Joe’s relocation is no exception. Vicky writes, ‘Beware the Man with the Van’, advice they should have followed themselves. Things begin badly when their removal lorry destroys the village fountain, and from that point on, life is never dull.

The couple have no idea they will become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain. No idea they’ll be befriended by a 85 year old spliff smoking sex kitten and her extraordinary daughter, Judith. Their Spanish neighbours attempt to teach them Spanish ways and they are even rescued by a mule.

At the end of five years they must decide. Will they stay, or return to the relative sanity of England?

Woven into the chapters are a number of Spanish recipes given to Vicky by the village ladies. All manner of tapas, paella and barbecue ideas are offered, each one tried and tested. Even if you are not tempted to move to Spain, you can tuck into a slice of Andalucían life.

Awarded the HarperCollins Authonomy ‘Gold Star’, this charming, beautifully written book will have you laughing one minute, holding back tears the next, and finally reaching for your saucepan.

HarperCollins wrote:

‘laugh-out-loud funny...especially the Spanish women heckling over eggs from “The English”...hilarious...engaging...the interspersion of recipes is charming’.
