THE H WORD: Give this book to a gynecologist
06/24/09By Nora Coffey
Contact: THE H WORD: “Give this book to a gynecologist.” THE H WORD takes an unflinching look at the complex environment of hysterectomy, and those who enable it. It explores issues of money, sex, and power in the most common non-obstetric surgery performed in America. THE H WORD provides a wide range of information about how to avoid hysterectomy, while providing strategies to help women cope with some of the common problems they experience after the surgery. Perhaps most importantly, THE H WORD reveals the HERS Foundation’s initiative to stop the century-old practice of unwarranted hysterectomy and female castration from becoming the legacy of another generation of women and girls.
“I ordered 12 copies of the H Word,” says Grace Wellendorf of Onalaska, Wisconsin. “One for myself, a few for family members, and three to donate to local libraries, but also one for the doctor who hysterectomized and castrated me. Apparently he was unaware or closed his eyes and ears to how damaging this surgery is. I will be ordering more books so each one of my sisters and nieces will be able to educate themselves and to share the information with other women who have been prescribed a hysterectomy.”
Nora W. Coffey founded the Hysterectomy Educational Resources and Services Foundation (HERS) in 1982. She has lectured at medical schools, nursing schools, and Women’s Studies conferences, has been a guest on talk shows and news programs (Oprah, 20/20), and has been interviewed in most major newspapers and magazines. Rick Schweikert’s play un becoming, about the physical, political, economic, and social impact of hysterectomy, premiered Off Broadway in 2004. They led HERS’ 51-city, 51-week Protest & Play tour, which is the backdrop for THE H WORD.
