The book “OPIE Planning and Implementation for Teams” provides a way for work teams and non-profit committees to quickly learn basic project management. In the book, author Shirley Fine Lee, shares typical project roles and types, how to use the O.P.I.E. process to start and end projects on time, how to accomplish more with the resources available, how to measure and improve future projects, and a list of problems may put project plans at risk.
The OPIE book is based on the principle that all project team members and the project sponsor must agree on what the project goal and primary task accomplishments should be. Then it goes on to explain that all project team members must be willing to participate in meetings and do tasks related to the project in order to be successful. The book also explains how recording progress to the project plan or schedule and documenting changes in resources are important to completing the project within or near budget. The author states tasks listed on the schedule are important and the responsible team member should do their best to stay maintain the schedule because every team member has a role to play and they must understand their role in relation to the project to be successful. The book stresses that people are the most important resources to on-time completion and quality results for a project.
The OPIE process acronym indicates the four primary stages of a team project: Open, Plan, Implement, and End. Open is the stage where the project is determined to be both desirable and feasible through analysis. Plan is budgeting of resources for the project and getting approval to proceed. Implement is the stage where the plan is put into motion and changes are recorded and problems solved. End is the final stage where the project comes to conclusion and various administrative and measurement tasks are done to insure better project management in the future.
