Akhet, (216 pp., tbp, $14.00 available through all major retail outlets) is the story of Dr. Nicole Salem, an Archeologist who thinks she has the world figured out. She has a nice guy for a boyfriend, a job that she loves, and a mentor who though difficult she respects immensely. The book is named for the first of the three seasons of the Egyptian calendar (the period when the Nile river floods), and follows Nicole as she struggles to come to terms with the fact that her life will never be the same. While on a dig outside of Luxor, Egypt, however, Nicole’s life gets turned upside down. After taking what could have been a nasty spill into a newly discovered cavern, Nicole learns that all her preconceived notions about the world, and her place in it, are wrong. The gods that she studied are, in fact, real and one of them has a very special plan for Nicole; one where the rules of her old life very definitely do not apply. H.L.
