Future Imperfect explores a terrifying tomorrow
02/11/10By Sharon Vander Meer
In F.S. VANDER MEER’S most recent release, a woman wakes up in a strange setting with no past in a present she doesn't recognize.
A determined man searches for answers to the mysterious death of his father while appeasing the powerful but conflicting forces that control his life. He and the mysterious woman who has no past seek stability and sanity amid escalating political and environmental chaos in a not too distant future fraught with lies, treachery, and an altered environment. Sometimes the best intentions lead to bad outcomes and in Future Imperfect the best idea goes horribly wrong. The protagonists battle doubts, distrust and disillusionment. One is a pawn in a game she doesn’t have the rules for and the other is frustrated by a failing system and constraints that keep him from doing his job. Forces are at work that will take the world to the edge of oblivion and these two must find the answers before it is too late. Vander Meer has created a world of the future that is both plausible and terrifying. Science has given the world so much but science unrestrained can create a pit from which there is no escape. Her characters are neither magical nor mystical. They must find their way with wit, wisdom, and perseverance. Vander Meer and Future Imperfect will be featured at a book signing at a Second Saturday event, Feb. 13, 2 p.m., at Tome on the Range in Las Vegas, NM. Future Imperfect, The Ballad of Bawdy McClure, and Not Just Another Day are available in soft cover at Tome on the Range and by order at bookstores across the country. Online bookstores have all three Vander Meer titles in stock.
