Digital media in history education enhances creativity

Olivier Nyirubugara analyzed the usage of Internet in history education. Education which incorporated the use of Internet, proved to be more attractive for students along with stimulating their historical thinking and the use of a larger variety of sources as would otherwise be available to them, as is made clear in this work.


Nyirubugara performed his research in two classes during a period of several months. Students showed more interest in the teacher's education and the actual study-material if digital technology was utilized during class.

The accessability of relevant material still has room for improvement, since some relevant websites for historical education (e.g. museums) were harder to find though, through their poor visibility in search-engine results.

Through digital media, students interact more creatively with history concludes Nyirubugara while enhancing their ability in regards to historical thinking. Examples are the incorporation of current political images in papers and relating them to the historical topics. Multi-tasking, remarkably, is a commonly developed quality through Internet-use in class, where students search for topic-related information on the Internet while following the teacher's class.
