There’ve been hundreds of fairy tale retellings published since the late 1800’s, but none quite like this one. In The Fairytale Keeper series, debut novelist, Andrea Cefalo, explains the origin of all Grimm’s fairy tales which revolve around one girl, a cobbler’s apprentice, Adelaide Schumacher, who will one day be immortalized in the story of Snow White.
In 13th century Cologne, Germany, feisty Adelaide grapples with grief over her mother, Katrina's death. The parish priest defiles Katrina's remains during the funeral that her father, Ansel, bribed him to perform which results in the parish boycotting the corrupt Church. Meanwhile Katrina's sulking cousin, Galadriel, arrives with good intentions though she’s too self-indulgent to be helpful. Adelaide’s grieving father turns to drink and work to squelch his emotions while the protective boy-next-door, Ivo, tries to keep Adelaide safe from herself and her enemies. During the turmoil, Adelaide must quickly define what it means to be strong and what it takes to save herself and those she loves from illness, government corruption, personal enemies, and false friends. Through the people she meets, the stories she’s told, and the events during her formative years, Adelaide will come up with the characters and tales the Grimm brothers later record.
